Coconut rafters are used extensively to retain the Maldivian feel. A lot of wood is used to ensure that the design blends in with the lush tropical vegetation on the islands. A classic touch is leaving the floors as they are - of soft white sand that is a pleasure to walk on. In some of the more up-market resort islands the floors might be paved, and paved walkways might lead you to your room and back, but this is often avoided in the majority of islands.

The bars too, are often built of wood, with thatched roofs. Strategically placed decorations like replicas of the traditional Maldivian dhonis add to the local look.
